One of the banqueters is a mature man; he holds a stringed instrument; his cup is on the table. He looks back towards his young companion, who raises his cup and is perhaps singing, accompanied by the music of the female aulos-player standing between them. The glances of the characters are charged with erotic desire.
The other side shows three figures in conversation. The jumping weight that hangs on the wall points to everyday life in Athens, but the aged man standing in the centre holds a sceptre characteristic of mythical kings. The distant past and the present both appear on the vase, but we do not know how they are related.
