Fragment of a bearded male head
White marble
Marble origin: Naxos (Greece) or Ephesos (Turkey)?
Mineralogy: calcite
Texture: heteroblastic
Maximum grain size (MGS): 2.33 mm
δ18OV-PDB: -6.58 ‰
δ13CV-PDB: 2.25 ‰
Cathodoluminescence color: light brown and brown
Cathodoluminescence intensity: weak
Cathodoluminescence distribution: heterogeneous
Stable isotope data fall in a zone where different source areas (i.e. Marmara, Naxos, Afyon, Pentelikon) overlap and the data are inconclusive. The MGS, the texture and the cathodomicrofacies suggest that this marble originates from Naxos. The data are also compatible with a possible Ephesos origin.
