Marble analysis, 4833
Fragment of a relief: two youths with an altar
White marble
Marble origin: Carrara (Italy)
Mineralogy: calcite
Texture: heteroblastic
Maximum grain size (MGS): 0.54 mm
δ18OV-PDB: -1.84 ‰
δ13CV-PDB: 2.06 ‰
Cathodoluminescence color: orange to brown
Cathodoluminescence intensity: intermediate
Cathodoluminescence distribution: heterogeneous
Stable isotope data fall in a zone where different source areas (i.e. Carrara, Hymettus, Paros, Thasos, Marmara, Göktepe) overlap and the data are inconclusive. However, the MGS, the texture and the orange color of luminescence support Carrara as the origin of this marble.
