Marble analysis, 50.1325

Statuette of Apollo

White marble
Marbles origin:
50.1325: Paros (Paros-Stefani) (Greece)
ad 50.1325 I and ad 50.1325 II: Carrara (Italy)

Sample 50.1325
Mineralogy: calcite
Texture: heteroblastic
Maximum grain size (MGS): 1.63 mm
δ18OV-PDB: -2.10 ‰
δ13CV-PDB: 4.90 ‰
Cathodoluminescence color: light blue and dark blue
Cathodoluminescence intensity: weak
Cathodoluminescence distribution: heterogeneous

All data are in accordance with Paros (Paros-Stefani) as the marble origin.

ad 50.1325 I and ad 50.1325 II
Mineralogy: calcite
Texture: homeoblastic
Maximum grain size (MGS): 0.58 mm (ad 50.1325 I); 0.51 mm (ad 50.1325 II)
δ18OV-PDB: -2.35 ‰  (ad 50.1325 I); -2.27 ‰ (ad 50.1325 II)
δ13CV-PDB: 1.75 ‰ (ad 50.1325 I); 0.77 ‰ (ad 50.1325 II)
Cathodoluminescence color: orange to dark brown
Cathodoluminescence intensity: intermediate to weak
Cathodoluminescence distribution: heterogeneous

Stable isotope analyses fall in a zone where different sources areas (i.e. Carrara, Aphrodisias, Hymettus, Paros, Marmara, Thasos, Afyon, Göktepe) overlap and the data are not conclusive. However the MGS, the texture and the orange color of luminescence support Carrara as its origin.
