Stamps made from clay, stone or wood and decorated with the sign of the cross, animal figures or geometric patterns were used to stamp the eucharistic bread. Stamps bearing sacred symbols could also have been used in domestic realm in order to magically protect the bread and its consumers. The intersected squares form an eight pointed star which symbolized the universe in the Ancient Near East and was considered as luck-bringing.
