The statue depicts Hephaistos. The bearded, curly haired god of blacksmiths wears a conical hat (pilos), his usual attribute. In Greek culture, this hat was characteristically worn by craftsmen, although Odysseus could also be represented this way. The marble bust in the Vatican may be a Roman adaptation of the cult statue that stood in the Hephaisteion in Athens, and was created by a famous Greek sculptor, Alkamenes — a disciple of Pheidias — around 420—410 BC.
