The body of the three meter tall statue was made of Pentelic marble, while the head was carved of the more valuable Parian marble. The moustache, short beard and long hair combed to the back do not follow contemporary Greek fashion, and neither does the arrangement of the drapery. The man wears sandals and “socks”, traces of a scabbard are visible at his left hand. The statue is traditionally regarded as that of Maussollos, but the identification is uncertain. It probably represents a member of the ruling dynasty. The head is abraded, which suggests that it once stood outdoors. The excavators found it in pieces, and reassembled it from seventy-seven fragments
