The frieze, which depicts the battle of the Greeks with the Amazons, probably appeared on the lower part of the monument, above the podium. From the friezes of the Maussolleion, this was perhaps
the closest to the spectators. The slabs show a clash between naked Greeks and Amazons wearing
short chitons; the warriors fight duels on horseback and on foot. The hero Heracles backs the Greeks: he is identified by his usual weapon, the club and the lion’s skin covering his shoulder. The images
of the amazonomachia, the fight against the Amazons elevate Maussollos, whose tomb they decorated, into the sphere of myths.
