The plaster cast preserves a part of a statue usually identified as the portrait of the Macedonian king Alexander III (336—323 BC), and formerly kept in the Rondanini Collection. According to ancient tradition there was a triumphal monument that depicted the Macedonian king, Philip II (382— 336 BC), on a chariot, and the charioteer was his son, the later Alexander the Great. The statue in Munich is probably a Roman adaptation of that monument. It is also possible, however, that the facial features merely resemble Alexander the Great, but the statue represents a hero (for example Achilles).
