The bearded god, standing in a relaxed posture, wears only a mantle draped around his waist. In the Classical period, Athenian citizens were also represented this way — there are things in common between god and man. The right forearm of the cast is a modern restoration, and we do not know what the statue once held. It had earlier been identified as Asclepius, the healing god, today it is more often seen as a representation of Zeus. The marble statue in Dresden may have followed a work by Pheidias or one of his disciples. The colour of the plaster cast suggests that its Classical period model was thought to have been bronze.
