Quite unusually, the statue depicts Artemis—Diana in the act of putting on her clothes: she is pinning her mantle on her right shoulder with a fibula. Her chiton, bound twice, leaves her left shoulder bare — another rare motif in representations of the virgin goddess. Her usual attributes, the bow and arrow, are missing, only her sandals hint at her being the goddess of hunting. The treatment of the face (the slit eyes, small mouth, narrow forehead) and the proportions of the body evoke the visual canon created by Praxiteles, and attest to the sculptor’s immense influence.
