The piece probably formed part of a group that represented the Calydonian boar hunt: the Greek heroes, led by Meleagros, fought shoulder to shoulder against the enormous beast that the gods had sent upon Calydon as a punishment. The posture of the feet and the head suggest that the boar had just noticed the huntsmen and is tensely anticipating their arrival. The marble statue was severely damaged in the fire of Florence in 1762, and a significant part had to be restored. Many copies of the statue were made, the most famous one stands at the Mercato Nuovo in Florence.
