The present state of the statue in Florence is the result of several phases of reworking, it is thus difficult to determine how intact the ancient statue had been before it was first restored in the sixteenth century. The two opponents compete in pankration, which largely corresponds to today’s mixed martial arts. The body of the wrestlers is intertwined in a pyramidal composition, both have well developed musculature. The upper figure is about to win: he twists the arm of his opponent to his back, and presses him to the ground. The model of the statue must date to the third century BC, but we do not know who created it.
