The statue shows a nude, sleeping satyr. He has a horse’s tail, which differentiates him from human beings. His wreath of ivy also connects him to the sphere of Dionysos. He is lying on a rock, which places the scene outdoors. Looking more closely, one can see that the face is tense and frowning, and the mouth is open as if he had difficulty breathing. He lies with feet apart, a position that was deemed unwor - thy of man in antiquity. The satyr is thus probably not resting but fighting a severe hangover. The feast of Dionysos is slowly coming to an end.
