The statue depicts a boy absorbed in the withdrawal of a thorn from the sole of his foot. He sits on a rock, his left leg crossed over his right knee, bending forward and holding his foot. With his hair smoothed down, the treatment of the head recalls the so-called Severe style, which was dominant in the early fifth century BC, but the posture follows Hellenistic models of the third and second centuries BC. The artist of the bronze statue in Rome thus freely combined different artistic styles. The artwork, which is known in several ancient versions, was found in the twelfth century; this was one of the most frequently adapted ancient sculptures in Renaissance art.
