This statue also follows a work of Polykleitos, the Diadoumenos. The youth must have held a ribbon, which he was knotting around his head (diadoumenos). The gesture is typical of the depiction of victorious athletes. While the original statue was cast in bronze, the Delian figure was carved from marble, and complemented with a tree-trunk support. The mantle thrown over the trunk and the quiver are symbols of Apollo: the statue of a victorious athlete was thus transformed into that of a triumphant deity. The statue was found in a wealthy house on Delos. Around the time of its creation, Delos was a centre of international commerce.
