The unfinished statue of a nude youth illustrates the technique used by Greek sculptors in the Archaic period. The design was extracted from a regular, prismatic marble block. First they probably drew the outline of the statue on the block, then progressing from each side simultaneously, they carved off the spare stone layer by layer. In the phase we see here, the sculptor had already roughed out the mass for the body parts of the nude figure, but he never got to carve the finer details and finish the polishing of the surface
