The head from the statue of a youth illustrates how Greek sculptors modelled the human face in the early sixth century BC. This face is angular and “geometric”. The hair is parted into arched tresses above the forehead, while falling down in long, pearl-like locks at the back. The eyes are of an arched, triangular shape, the mouth is narrow and linear. The original statue was found in Boeotia, in the sanctuary of Apollon on Mount Ptoion. It was carved of local marble, and served as a votive gift offered to the deity. It belongs to the early phase of the production of kouros statues.
