The original head of Aphrodite is carved of Pentelic marble. The hairstyle follows well-known images of the goddess: it is arranged in free locks at the sides, and tied into a bow at the top of the head. The eye sockets are empty — the eyes were made from a different material. The eyelids and the eyelashes were made of bronze, the iris and the pupils were made of different coloured glass. The ears are pierced, probably to receive (precious metal?) earrings. The statue reflects Classical Greek art, but it was probably made in the Roman period.
