The herm shows Heracles. The identification is mainly due to the locks of hair combed back at the forehead, resembling a lion’s mane. (The hairstyle is called leontis — “lionshaped” in Greek.) The head is adorned with a poplar wreath, with ribbons falling down the shoulders. Details of the head and the wreath also appear on a full-figure statue, which is commonly referred to as the Hope Heracles after its earlier owner. That piece was made in the middle of the second century AD following different Greek statues of the Classical period. The type survives in a number of further representations.
