Marble analysis, 86.1.A
Fragment of a pilaster capital
White marble
Marble origin: Carrara (Italy) or Göktepe (Turkey)?
Mineralogy: calcite
Texture: heteroblastic
Maximum grain size (MGS): 0.58 mm
δ18OV-PDB: -1.94 ‰
δ13CV-PDB: 2.20 ‰
Cathodoluminescence color: purple and dark brown
Cathodoluminescence intensity: weak
Cathodoluminescence distribution: heterogeneous
Stable isotope data fall in a zone where different source areas (i.e. Paros, Thasos, Marmara, Carrara, Göktepe, Afyon, Hymettus) overlap and the data are inconclusive. The MGS and the texture match with those of the Göktepe and Carrara marbles. The cathodomicrofacies pattern does not permit to discriminate between the two sources.
