Marble analysis, 2005.2.A
White marble
Place of origin:
Bust: Carrara (Italy) or Göktepe (Turkey)
Right shoulder: Afyon (Turkey) or Pentelikon (Greece)
Collar: Carrara (Italy)
Bust
Mineralogy: calcite
Texture: heteroblastic
Maximum grain size: 0.75 mm
δ18OV-PDB : -2.44 ‰ -2.44 ‰ -2.72 ‰ -2.72 ‰
δ13CV-PDB: 2.78 ‰ 2.70 ‰ 2.93 ‰ 2.84 ‰
Cathodoluminescence color: brown-red and dark blue
Cathodoluminescence intensity: weak
Cathodoluminescence distribution: heterogeneous
Stable isotopic data fall in a zone where different source areas (i.e. Paros, Thasos, Marmara, Carrara, Hymettus, Göktepe, Aphrodisias, Afyon, Naxos, Pentelikon) overlap and the data are inconclusive. The MGS, the texture and the cathodomicrofacies match with those of the Carrara marbles, but we do not exclude an origin of Göktepe.
Right shoulder
Mineralogy: calcite
Texture: heteroblastic
Maximum grain size: 0.93 mm
δ18OV-PDB : -3.71 ‰ -3.74 ‰
δ13CV-PDB: -2.80 ‰ 2.76 ‰
Cathodoluminescence color: yellow, light brown and dark brown
Cathodoluminescence intensity: strong to weak depending on the place
Cathodoluminescence distribution: heterogeneous
Stable isotopic data fall in a zone where different source areas (i.e. Marmara, Afyon, Pentelikon, Naxos, Paros) overlap, and the data are inconclusive. The cathodomicrofacies, the texture, and the MGS are in accordance with Afyon and Pentelikon marbles.
Collar
Mineralogy: calcite
Texture: heteroblastic
Maximum grain size: 1mm
δ18OV-PDB : -1.97 ‰ -2.10 ‰
δ13CV-PDB: 2.23 ‰ 2.24 ‰
Cathodoluminescence color: red-brown and dark brown
Cathodoluminescence intensity: intermediate
Cathodoluminescence distribution: heterogeneous
Stable isotopic data fall in a zone where different source areas (i.e. Paros, Thasos, Marmara, Carrara, Hymettus, Göktepe, Aphrodisias, Afyon, Naxos, Pentelikon) overlap and the data are inconclusive. The cathodomicrofacies, the texture, and the MGS allow to propose Carrara as the provenance of this marble.
