Marble analysis, 8426
White marble
Marble origin:
8426: Paros (Paros-Marathi) (Greece)
8426 I and 8426 II: Carrara (Italy)
8426
Mineralogy: calcite
Texture: heteroblastic
Maximum grain size (MGS): 1.86 mm
δ18OV-PDB: -3.37 ‰
δ13CV-PDB: 5.32 ‰
Cathodoluminescence color: purple
Cathodoluminescence intensity: weak
Cathodoluminescence distribution: homogeneous
All data are in accordance with Paros (Paros-Marathi) as the marble origin.
8426 I and 8426 II
Mineralogy: calcite
Texture: homeoblastic
Maximum grain size (MGS): 0.82 mm (8426 I); 0.54 mm (8426 II)
δ18OV-PDB: -0.38 ‰ (8426 I); -1.71 ‰ (8426 II)
δ13CV-PDB: 1.92 ‰ (8426 I); 2.80 ‰ (8426 II)
Cathodoluminescence color: brown-orange
Cathodoluminescence intensity: intermediate
Cathodoluminescence distribution: homogeneous
Stable isotope data fall in a zone where different source areas (i.e. Paros, Thasos, Marmara, Carrara, Hymettus) overlap and the data are inconclusive. However, the MGS, the texture and the orange color of luminescence support Carrara as the origin of this marble.
