Marble analysis, 2000.24.A
Relief with tensa (ex-Medinaceli collection)
White marble
Marble origin: Carrara (Italy)
Sample 2005-36
Mineralogy: calcite
Texture: heteroblastic
Maximum grain size (MGS): 0.82 mm
δ18OV-PDB: -2,46 ‰ -2,47 ‰ -2,45 ‰
δ13CV-PDB: 2,02 ‰ 2,02 ‰ 2,03 ‰
Cathodoluminescence color: brown-red
Cathodoluminescence intensity: weak
Cathodoluminescence distribution: heterogeneous
Stable isotopic analyses fall in a zone where different source areas (i.e., Paros, Thasos, Marmara, Carrara, Göktepe, Afyon, Hymettus, Aphrodisias) overlap and the data are inconclusive. The MGS and the texture match with those of the Göktepe and Carrara marbles. The cathodomicrofacies pattern support Carrara as the origin of this marble.
Sample 2005-37 (head of the horse)
Mineralogy: calcite
Texture: homeoblastic
Maximum grain size (MGS): 0.51 mm
Cathodoluminescence color: brown-red
Cathodoluminescence intensity: weak
Cathodoluminescence distribution: homogeneous
The marble of the head of the horse should be similar to the marble of the previous sample according the texture, the MGS and the cathodomicrofacies.
