Marble analysis, 2009.1.A
Funerary stele from the island of Rheneia
White marble
Marble origin: Naxos or Rinia or Delos (Greece)
Mineralogy: calcite
Accessory mineral: mica
Texture: heteroblastic
Maximum grain size (MGS): 1.90 mm
δ18OV-PDB: -4.47 ‰ -4.33 ‰
δ13CV-PDB: 3.05 ‰ 3.06 ‰
Cathodoluminescence color: brown-red
Cathodoluminescence intensity: moderate
Cathodoluminescence distribution: homogeneous
The MGS, the texture, the isotopic signature and the color of luminescence are in accordance with those of Naxos marbles. Naxos is the most probable source. However, we don’t exclude the island of Rinia and Delos. The isotopic signature don’t match those of the marbles of Rinia and Delos but we have limited data.
