Marble analysis, 4758
White marble
Marble origin:
4758/1 and 4758/2: Göktepe (Turkey)
4758/3: Carrara (Italy)
Samples 4758/1 and 4758/2
Mineralogy: calcite
Texture: heteroblastic
Maximum grain size (MGS): 0.51 mm (4758/1); 0.70 mm (4758/2)
δ18OV-PDB: -2.68 ‰ (4758/1); -2.79 ‰ -2.68 ‰ (4758/2)
δ13CV-PDB: 2.66 ‰ (4758/1); 2.57 ‰ 2.66 ‰ (4758/2)
Cathodoluminescence color: dark blue
Cathodoluminescence intensity: weak
Cathodoluminescence distribution: homogeneous
Stable isotope data fall in a zone where different source areas (i.e. Carrara, Hymettus, Paros, Thasos, Marmara, Aphrodisias, Naxos) overlap and the data are inconclusive. However, the MGS, the texture and the blue color of luminescence support Göktepe as the origin of this marble.
Sample 4758/3 (post-antique restoration between 1 and 2)
Mineralogy: calcite
Texture: homeoblastic
Maximum grain size (MGS): 0.58 mm
δ18OV-PDB: -1.85 ‰
δ13CV-PDB: 1.58 ‰
Cathodoluminescence color: brown-orange
Cathodoluminescence intensity: intermediate
Cathodoluminescence distribution: homogeneous
Stable isotope data fall in a zone where different source areas (i.e. Carrara, Hymettus, Paros, Thasos, Marmara, Aphrodisias, Naxos) overlap and the data are inconclusive. However, the MGS, the texture and the orange color of luminescence support Carrara as the origin of this marble.
