The statue shows Meleager after the Calydonian boar hunt. He has already defeated the enormous boar, which the gods had sent to punish the Calydonians. Meleager stands naked and barefoot, as heroes usually do, he only wears a short mantle fastened at the right shoulder. The right hand rests on his back — he has nothing to do. His left hand probably held a spear, which did not survive. His hound sits on his right; to his left, there is a rock for support, bearing the huge head of the boar. Meleager was one of the most popular heroes of the Graeco-Roman world, whose figure was preserved by many similar statues.
