This standing female figure is one of the earliest large stone statues from ancient Greece. The woman wears a long dress tied with a belt and a scarf. Both hands are close to the body, and exhibit a drilled hole, showing that they originally held something — probably a bow and an arrow. This would suggest that the statue depicts the goddess Artemis, which is supported by the inscription on the left thigh, stating that it was offered to Artemis by a woman called Nikandre from Naxos. The statue had once been richly painted, traces of which were still visible upon its discovery.
