The three reliefs probably decorated a statue base. They were found in Mantineia, and probably once stood in the sanctuary of Leto, the mother of Apollo. One relief shows the contestants. Apollon sits on a rock, holding a string instrument, his confident posture foreshadowing his victory. Marsyas stands in front of him, ecstatically blowing his aulos. Between them, there is the Scythian slave, with a knife in his right hand — he is ready to perform the punishment. Each of the two other reliefs represents three Muses with bowed heads, listening to the music. Their lord, Apollo decided that they should judge over the contest.
